DANVERS, Mass., Jun 22, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Vogt Power International Inc., located in Louisville, KY, a subsidiary of Babcock Power Inc., based in Danvers, MA, announced today it has been selected by Progress Energy Carolinas, a subsidiary of Progress Energy Inc., to supply Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) for the company's Lee and Sutton power plants.

Vogt Power will design, manufacture and deliver 3 HRSGs to the H. F. Lee Energy Complex in Goldsboro, NC, and 2 HRSGs to the Sutton Energy Complex in Wilmington, NC. The HRSGs will be auxiliary fired, three pressure with reheat, natural circulation, with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to operate behind Siemens SGT6-5000FD gas turbines. The SCR systems will assist the plant in meeting strict state emissions guidelines by reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to the formation of urban ozone. The equipment also includes CO systems for the removal of carbon monoxide.

Progress Energy recently announced the retirement of 11 coal-fired units that lack air-emissions control equipment at four sites in North Carolina. Switching from coal to natural gas is expected to result in a 40-50 percent drop in the carbon dioxide emissions rate, a 95 percent reduction in the nitrogen oxide emissions rate, and near elimination of sulfur dioxide and mercury emissions.

"We are pleased to assist Progress Energy in creating a cleaner environment. The installation of Vogt Power HRSGs, combined with the SCR systems, will help Progress Energy drastically reduce regulated emissions. These projects exemplify Babcock Power's bpigreen initiative, to provide our customers with cost effective and environmentally responsible solutions," stated Stephen Kapsalis, President and CEO of Vogt Power International.

Babcock Power Inc., www.babcockpower.com, through its subsidiaries, is one of the world's leading suppliers of technology, equipment, and services to the power generation industry. Babcock Power subsidiary companies include; Vogt Power International (Louisville, KY), Thermal Engineering International (USA) Inc.
